CMS students visit the DIA

On Thursday, March 22, 2012, fifty CMS art students and staff attended a field trip to the Detroit Institute of Art.  This trip was grant funded by Target.  Our students were able to view the Hughie Lee-Smith painting that is on loan from Fitzgerald to the DIA.  The painting was discovered in the high school and now hangs in a DIA gallery which features prominent African American artists.  CMS students spent the day on a formal tour of the museum including a stop at the Lee-Smith painting and then enjoyed lunch at the museum.  A great experience was had by all!

FITZ Staff with Guests

On Tuesday, the 30th of August, Fitzgerald Public Schools had the honor of hosting representatives from AYES, General Motors, SPX and a delegation from China.  Our district was selected for its outstanding automotive facility.  China would like to develop an automotive program for their students. They visited our auto shop as a model of how an externship training facility could operate. Brad Pollum, Ralph Romain, and Jeff Bruni prepared the facility for the visit and the Superintendent helped host the event and welcomed our guest.

Math Students use online program - Khan Academy

Miss Lazzara’s Tier Math students use an online math program called Khan Academy ( khanacademy.org ) at Chatterton.  It is a program that allows students to progress in math skills starting at their own skill level and allows them to move at their own pace.  Assessment scores have been steadily increasing among the Tier Math students.  To help other Tier Math teachers learn the program and teach their students how to use it, Miss Lazzara’s students became the “teachers” and worked one-on-one with the students in the other Tier Math classes.  All students (as well as teachers) in the Tier classes enjoyed this very much!  The level of maturity and on-task behavior was exceptional among “teachers” and “students” during this process.  There are now over 100 students at Chatterton using Khan Academy and growing – word has spread about the successful program and some “regular” math classes are beginning to use the program as well.  Barbara VanSweden, Fitzgerald Public Schools Superintendent, was recently invited to observe Miss Lazzara’s students using Khan Academy.

Mrs. VanSweden was able to see what the program was all about and even asked students questions such as how they use the program at school and at home to help them increase their understanding of math concepts.  The students as well as
Mrs. VanSweden enjoyed the visit!
